Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Mercedes-Benz adds a second midsize SUV for 2006, a crossover-type six-passenger wagon with all-wheel drive and available V8 power. R-Class shares its basic structure with Mercedes' ML-Class SUV, but seats six instead of five and is 12 inches longer in wheelbase and 15 inches longer overall.

Two models are offered: The R350 has a 268-hp V6, the R500 a 302-hp V8. A 7-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Both Rs have all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. R350 has 17-inch wheels, R500 18s; 19s are available for both. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows are standard. Seating is in a 2-2-2 arrangement, with folding 2nd-row buckets and a folding 50/50 split 3rd-row bench. Leather/vinyl upholstery is standard. Mercedes Tele Aid assistance is available for R350, standard on R500. Available for both are a navigation system and steering-linked xenon headlamps.
Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a 2-door, 2-passenger luxury convertible, or convertible sports car, available in 4 trims, ranging from the SL500 Roadster to the SL65 AMG Roadster.

Upon introduction, the SL500 Roadster is equipped with a standard 5.0-liter, V8, 302-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 24-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The SL65 AMG Roadster is equipped with a standard 6.0-liter, V12, 604-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 13-mpg in the city and 19-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard
Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The 2007 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a 4-door, 5-passenger luxury sport-utility, available in two trims, the G500 and the G55 AMG.

Upon introduction, the G500 is equipped with a standard 5.0-liter, V8, 292-horsepower engine that achieves 13-mpg in the city and 14-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The G55 AMG is equipped with a standard 5.5-liter, V8, 493-horsepower, supercharged engine that achieves 12-mpg in the city and 14-mpg on the highway. Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
Based on the same platform as the firm's latest S-Class, the next-generation Mercedes CL two-door will be more than five metres long. And as you can see from our pictures, the styling has a controversial edge to it, especially at the back.

Inside, there will be seating for four, but it's up front that occupants will be most comfortable. The dashboard will resemble the cockpit of the S-Class and feature similar technology, including a mouse-like device for controlling everything from the radio to the massaging seats. In addition, buyers will be able to specify night vision technology, which can project an image on a screen in the dashboard to give the driver a better view of the road ahead. Also available will be the latest radar cruise control, designed to automatically regulate the CL's speed - right down to a standstill in stop-start traffic.
Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
The CLS, with its long, low, curvaceous styling and frameless doors, has real mean and moody road presence. And it's rewarding to drive too, delivering sharper and more composed handling than the standard E-Class saloon, with decent steering feel. Body control isn't sports-car tight, meaning it takes a short while to settle over bumps, but the trade-off is a ride quality that has to be experienced to be believed. The CLS floats over uneven surfaces like a magic carpet, and glides where rivals can fidget. Overall, a very mature car, powered by an excellent range of engines that all provide effortless speed. Diesel is the choice unit overall but the 5.4-litre V8 in the AMG 55 model is incredible. However, the seven-speed automatic gearbox is hyperactive and brakes are inconsistent, making it hard to stop smoothly.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
The chassis is close to flawless. Adaptive air suspension gives a ride that has to be experienced to be believed; the cushioning is superb, yet the S is quick to recover composure, and even on rough surfaces there's no suspension or road noise. No rival can match the Mercedes for smoothness, nor body control or grip. And while the steering is slow, the S-Class excels in every environment. Although expensive, it really does set new driving standards. It's just a pity the 7G-Trionic gearbox kicks down so readily, rather than using the torque of the superb diesel and petrol engines. True, shifts are virtually undetectable, but the software needs more polish. No worries form the engines though; petrols are excellent, particularly the S 600L's 5.5-litre V12; the amazing acceleration defies your senses, as there's none of the noise normally associated with high speeds. Mind you, the top-selling diesel has smoothness and refinement that's on a par with petrol engines. When driving it, at no time did we wish we were in a petrol
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The E-Class's aim is to deliver peerless comfort and refinement. In that regard, it's excellent. No rival rides as well on the motorway or across pitted tarmac. However, the body is neither as stiff nor as well insulated as it could be, and the Mercedes occasionally becomes unsettled on particularly bumpy roads. We suspect the suspension is set up for heavier variants that steamroller over rough roads more effectively. Roll is an issue in corners, and the E isn't as engaging as, say, BMW's sporty 5-Series, with less precise steering. But it copes well, is nicely balanced and effortlessly easy to get on with. There's a wide range of V6 and V8 engines that all perform well too - though the surprise of the range has to be the lowly four-cylinder 2.2-litre, whose smooth, quiet manners and ample torque help make it stronger than you may expect. Avoid the sloppy manual gearbox though; buyers will be far better off with an automatic.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The C-Class boasts a very comfortable chassis. The ride is extremely comfortable, displaying a real big car feel to undulations that mimics the larger S-Class. And dynamically it pushes the BMW 3-Series - its direct rival - far harder than you'd expect. It has the same crisp turn-in, taut damping and positive chassis that makes its rival so enjoyable. Only the traction control (which can't be turned off) and steering don't quite measure up - the latter is well weighted, but doesn't provide such detailed information as the BMW's system. Then again, it's certainly less demanding to drive, cruising happily with minimal road noise at motorway speeds. A large range of engines ranges from a 143bhp 1.8-litre to a 272bhp 3.5-litre V6 - and a high performance C 55 AMG V8 - while CDI diesels are also popular; the C 320 CDI packs an exceptional V6 oil burner. The foot-operated parking brake is a real irritation though, particularly in cars with manual gearboxes.
Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
The GL is an impressive feat of engineering, blending genuine off-road ability with fine on-road dynamics. It's huge, high-quality, but very expensive.

+ Excellent on-road handling, good performance, capable off-road, classy and spacious cabin, third-row seats, brakes
- Price, costly options, massive dimensions, poor fuel economy, high emissions, not different enough from M-Class
Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class
Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class
Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class
Driven in isolation, the SLK is rewarding, but it's not a genuine sports car. The brakes aren't that impressive, for example. They take too long to come to a halt from 60mph, the ABS activates too quickly and the pedal lacks feel. The same applies to the over-assisted steering, while the suspension isn't as well controlled as it should be, with a tendency to pitch and dive when pushed. This makes it feel comparatively loose and sloppy, a sensation not helped by the over-active traction control. Instead, it's happiest when cruising. Although it bucks a bit on bumpy B-roads, it's generally supple and relaxing. Combine this with the sense of security and isolation generated by the hard-top, and the Mercedes emerges as an ideal car for long trips. Particularly with a combination of light kerb weight and a strong 3.5-litre V6 engine option. This summons Porsche-beating acceleration, though it doesn't sound particularly great. Also available is a surprisingly able 2.0-litre supercharged four-cylinder, though this sounds even less appealing than the V6.
Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Mercedes aims to tighten its grip on the UK market by boosting the number of cars available with its advanced 4-Matic four-wheel drive.

Of the 48 models with the improved set-up, Britain will get 16; these include the M-Class and GL-Class off-roaders. But the firm has opted not to bring the C, E and S-Class saloon versions here.
